The Family You Choose
On Friday I held a training for staff members of Avega Agahozo, the Association of the Genocide Widows of Rwanda. They talked about the importance of personal storytelling as a way to build strength and trust among their now nearly 25,000 members who work in cooperatives all over the country.
Sarah, a young woman in her early 30’s, talked about what she values most: togetherness. She lost her whole family when she was only a girl. As an adult she made the choice to reach out and connect with others until she created a new kind of family. “If you find people that love and accept you, they can be like your family,” she said. She wants to tell her story to inspire others to do the same – to reach out, to reconnect, and to feel a sense of belonging among the families that they create.
As we approach the holidays, I hope that you are able to spend time with the people that you love, whomever they may be.
