Gira Ubushobozi Program

In response to the increase in unemployment due to COVID-19, we designed this program to equip youth with the right combination of soft and professional skills to make them more competent on the job market and increase their confidence in starting businesses or income-generating activities.

The Problem

In Rwanda, youth accounts for the highest percentage of the population and plays an essential role in developing the country. However, unemployment rates are high among youth due to limited access to information and opportunities, a low level of employable skills, and inadequate access to resources. The economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated those challenges, and this crisis saw many workers being let go from work either temporarily or permanently and resulted in an increased scarcity of jobs.

Our Solution

The Gira Ubushobozi initiative focuses on equipping youth from disadvantaged communities and recent graduates from high school and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs with leadership and key soft skills ranging from professional readiness to problem-solving and goal-setting. Youth learn 21st-century skills that are necessary for them to thrive in today's world, and engage with leading professionals in top positions.

Complementing technical skills and education that the youth receive with vital professional and soft skills is critical in ensuring an economic transformation for their future in a COVID world. We aim to see that youth will be more competent on the job market as they navigate the pandemic's impact. On the other hand, we also aim to develop their resilience and confidence to start businesses or income-generating activities that are sustainable and honing their skills and talents.
