Rise and STEM Program

This program is designed to support the participation and advancement of women and girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, this initiative provides capacity-building and leadership training to help them overcome the cultural and economic setbacks of working in strongly male-dominated industries.

The Problem

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in all its forms, including ICT, redefines and revolutionizes the way we all live and work. It is crucial and plays a significant role in national development. However, a gender gap in STEM persists where women are still underrepresented. This roots from gender stereotypes, expectations regarding what women can or can not do, the discrimination that women who pursue STEM careers face in the male-dominated workplaces, and lack of access to women peers, role models, and mentors.

Our Solution

Rise & STEM will support young women and girls in Rwanda's disadvantaged or rural areas that are pursuing their studies in STEM fields at secondary and university education levels as well as recent graduates. In partnership with relevant ICT institutions and high-profile experts in STEM, the women and girls will have the opportunity to receive training in essential confidence-building and soft skills workshops including building their personal leadership, identifying and building strengths, and professional readiness. In addition to equipping them with these skills, they engage role models in STEM and are connected to learning and professional opportunities.

Impact Stories

Meet Divine, 21 years old

She participated in a leadership program in partnership with the Integrated Polytechnic Regional College of Karongi.

Before meeting Resonate

Divine had a dream that she thought was bigger than her, and people kept discouraging her. As a student, she wasn't sure that she was cut for her electrical and electronics engineering degree and was about to quit.

After meeting Resonate

She started believing that she is capable and was inspired to not give up. She made a decision to pursue her career goals while still pursuing her degree, and she is now doing part-time jobs installing electricity in people’s homes.

Portrait of Divine

In her own words

“The resilience I found from the Resonate workshops kept me in the STEM career.”
